The painting “And the Gods made War” is based on a classic christian image depicting San Miguel conquering the Devil. In my rendition the devil has been replaced by an aztec god depicted in a monstrous, scorpion like form. Reinforcing the traditional narrative claiming that the Conquest of Mexico was an expedition in which the heathens were defeated so that new souls could be saved to glorify God. this narrative usually leaves out the details of the plundering actions of the europeans and genocide of the native people.
