The painting “Killing in the Name of” is a commentary on the american historical concept of Manifest Destiny, hence the quote written upon the banner surrounding the dead indian chef. The origin of the term Manifest Destiny has been traced to american journalist John L. O’Sullivan who in 1845 wrote “Our Manifest destiny to overspread the continent allowed by providence for the free development of our yearly multiplying millions.” The idea that the Americans have a destiny to rule the land from shore to shore was used as a battlecry which justified the slaughtering of the native peoples as well as many other treacherous war crimes of our dark history. Visually I was very excited to attempt to depict a Native American Chief outside of a typical Southwestern landscape and rather thrust him into a traditional european backdrop.
