Santa Muerte is a Mexican Folk Saint who personifies death in the form of a female skeleton, typically depicted as a female Grim Reaper.
Folk Saints, unlike official Catholic ones, are spirits of the dead considered holy for their miracle working powers. Since there is no official doctrine for the Santa Muerte folk saint and is she is not based on a specific individual who has ever lived. She is looked to often by those who would not be accepted by the official church. She is prayed to for anything and everything from protection, health, wealth to the harming of ones enemies. The worship of the Santa Muerte, has gained over 10 million followers in the past decade, making her the fasted growing religion in the world. Her popularity can be traced to the violent reality that is found in the poorest slums of Mexico City where death is a far too common reality. This painting is a testament of the suffering of the Mexico’s less fortunate, who in their personal hell look to La Santa Muerte for help.
